MB&F Legacy Machine LM101: Watchmaking According to MB&F
4 min read

MB&F, short for "Maximilian Büsser & Friends", is an independent watchmaking brand founded in 2005 by Maximilian Büsser. MB&F's innovative approach involves collaborating with renowned watchmakers and artisans to design and create timepieces that continually push the boundaries of creativity and engineering. From the initial creative process to design, manufacturing and finishing, MB&F has assembled a collective of talented friends, giving them the recognition they deserve and putting the "Friends" in the brand's name.
Although the brand's watches draw inspiration from science fiction, aviation, animals and supercars, they all stand out for their avant-garde designs, futuristic shapes and innovative use of materials.
The first, "Horological Machines", is described as "contemporary machines inspired by our childhood" and draws direct inspiration from space stations, animals, animated television series and more.
The second, "Legacy Machines", represents "machines that MB&F would have created 100 years ago", combining more conventional and traditional watchmaking with contemporary engineering and innovation.
Every watch in the Legacy Machine collection features the iconic suspended balance wheel, one of the brand's most distinctive characteristics. Launched in 2014, the LM101 is no exception, pushing the boundaries of watchmaking even further with its movement, the first developed in-house by MB&F in collaboration with renowned watchmaker Kari Voutilainen, who was responsible for its aesthetics and finishing.

This model features a 40 mm case, with the time displayed at 2 o'clock and the power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock. The escapement is visible between the bridges supporting the "flying" balance wheel, captivating the eye with every oscillation. In 2021, the LM101 evolved with the introduction of stainless steel, a material rarely used by MB&F, along with a few aesthetic refinements and a double hairspring balance supplied by H. Moser & Cie.
Most MB&F cases in the Legacy Machine collection measure 44 mm in diameter and are too large for my 17.5 cm (6.9 in) wrist. But at 40 mm, this LM101 fits perfectly. This relatively "simple" model displays only the time and power reserve, resulting in a beautifully uncluttered dial that leaves plenty of room for the incredibly captivating suspended balance wheel. As always, the dial colour is fantastic, revealing subtle variations depending on the lighting and viewing angle.

Having had the chance to wear it for several days, I can say that this watch catches everyone's attention, with people trying to figure out what's happening inside.
My only criticism is the folding clasp. I'm not a fan of these spring-loaded clasps (similar to those used by RM or Chanel), which I find too long and rather impractical. But ultimately, it's a minor detail.
Whether you're a fan of the brand or not, there's no denying that this is a watch that leaves no one indifferent.
The dial and its various elements catch the light beautifully, making this a truly remarkable timepiece!
